Connotations Through Photos

The connotations through pictures, demonstrated in a artistic form of expression. we were given a task of showing our interpretation of words through a series of pictures captured by our group.

Loneliness

The isolation from the rest of the world and longlines into the distance is the purest form of loneliness. The slouched posture and heavy gaze connotes the separation from the rest of the community with no escape.

Poverty 

The abandonment and sadness through this photo connotes the poor health and low mood of the person trying to survive outside in the harsh weathers. The isolation and rejection from society leaves us questioning into how they got into that situation. 

Fear

The fear of being caught and the suspense into wanting more is displayed in this image. The girl just being discovered leaves us wanting to know what happens next, even if it is shown through pictures.

Love

The two hands touching through the glass is a powerful connotation to the force and delicacy of love, how comforting it is to see the simplicity of two people so far yet so close to one another.

Danger

Fire is linked with the danger and fear of death so using the idea of a flame, links to the danger and extreme risk of being burned or even dying through contact which could spark into something larger.

Greed

We chose a simple option, greed for food. With the food all around Meg, it indicates her power towards food, it's essentially drowning her willingness to keep grabbing at more is controlling her. It’s a simple but effective.

Wealth 

The shoe stepping over the money shows the power over the rich, the more we have the less we care. Someone standing over the money is power and control over that object. It shows the less of a value that the object provides for that person. 

Friendship

The heart indicates the power and strength of friendship, much like a real heart, its strength and the bond formed is unbreakable unless tampered with. The heart is a typical symbol of love and friendship and this is formed with two becoming one.

Weakness

Weakness can be depicted in many different ways but for us, we chose crying. By sitting alone and distressed creates a sense of vulnerability, something fragile about the position and angle helps tie in that depiction of weakness.  

Strength

Strength and anger here are shown through scratchings on the vending machine wall. You can show power and strength through the ability to tear away the metal sides and the power to be able to go through with that action provides a side to strength which isn’t exactly good.

Desire

The desire to want food and look upon the machine indicates the longing and want for that item, they stare into the glass and need for that item is shown through the grab on the glass and direct eye contact towards the need of food.

Purity

The purity in religion of a cross symbolizes the faith in Christianity which is linked to a christening which is a purifying act in religion. the cross is a sacred symbol in the religious community which links to the holiness and purity of the photo.
